BapApps.com presents:

iPlane Spotter

The aviation enthusiasts' best friend.

Special Notice 6/27/2010:

I have just become aware that changes introduced in iPhone OS 4.0 have rendered iPlane Spotter temporarily unusable. I am working to correct the issue. However, this is a hobby project, not a full-time business, and this will involve the Apple approval process. So, it may be several weeks before a fix is in place. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Update 07/7/2010:

Version 2.3, which will correct the current issues with iOS 4.0 has been submitted to Apple. Hopefully, it will be approved quickly.

iPlane Spotter Version 2.2 Now available!
New Features:

  • Warbird section with listings by type (ex: all P-51 Mustangs in the FAA registry)
  • Index added to nose art list - Makes lookups much easier.
  • Search registry with the last 3+ characters of the N-Number
  • Website URL added to aircraft info. Link directly to aircraft owner/organization website.

Click on the items on the left to check out the new gear in the iPlane Spotter store!

Every airworthy aircraft registered in the United States is required to display a registration or 'N' number on the aircraft.

Using that N-number, the enthusiast can quickly retrieve information about the aircraft, aircraft engine(s) and owner, right from their iPhone. The registry includes all civilian aircraft from the smallest light sport aircraft to the largest airliners. The only limitation is that access to the 3G network is required to download the data.

iPlane Spotter includes an extensive list of active warbird nose art names (over 600 and counting). New for version 2.2, the list is now indexed, which makes looking up names much easier.

If you spot a warbird, but can't get close enough to see the N-number, just use this list to cross reference the aircraft.

The iPlane Spotter database is updated regularly. Since the database resides on our server, the application does not take up much space in your iPhone.

New for version 2.2 is a section just for warbirds. It includes lists of major aircraft types. For instance, you can view a list of all the B-17s in the FAA registry.

Over 50 aircraft types are included and more are being added.

iPlane Spotter includes a section just for air racers, with classes, race numbers, aircraft names and pilot names.

For aircraft registered in other countries, iPlane Spotter can identify the country of origin. A complete list of the world's aircraft registration prefixes (their version of the 'N') can be viewed.

So, the next time you spot an interesting aircraft at EAA Airventure or your local airport, you'll be able to quickly identify the aircraft specifications, engine(s), owner and more.
